Welcome!

The Johnson Research Group is led by Dr. Richard H. Johnson of the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. Our interests lie in both tropical and midlatitude weather phenomena, with cutting-edge research on topics such as mesoscale convective systems, monsoon convection, extreme precipitation events, and various aspects of tropical dynamics and convection. A major emphasis lies in observational analyses of data from field programs and operational datasets. Recent field programs students and staff have participated in include TOGA-COARE (1992-93), SCSMEX (1998), NAME (2004), and TIMREX (2008). Motivated by observational findings, we also carry out theoretical and modeling studies to better understand the physical processes involved in the various phenomena. Our ultimate goal is to improve understanding and prediction of weather on both short and long-term time scales.
